Other members of the community who render very important and essential service to the monastery are the Extern Sisters.
Extern sisters serve the monastery in those external matters which cannot be cared for by the cloistered nuns. They serve as liaison between the community and the people outside. They may enter or leave the enclosure as their duties permit.
Like the cloistered nuns, extern sisters have to go through different steps of formation before becoming full-pledged members of the community. Their formation is one and the same as the cloistered nuns, that is, the length of the postulancy, novitiate and temporary vows, as well as the 5 year formation program. They are obliged to continue their formation through an ongoing study. They have active voice in the election of the prioress and other matters which pertain to extern.
